Frequently Asked Questions

~You tell us-- What do you need to know?~

"How do I use my phone?"

If you are dialing an on-campus number from your office, you only need to dial the last five digits of the number. If you are dialing an outside but local number you will need to dial the full 7-digit number. If you are dialing a long-distance number you need to use your long distance code, which you can get from the Facilities Supervisor.

Accessing administrative options

Follow the instructions below to set your personal options on your phone, such as your passcode and voicemail greeting:

  1. Pick up the receiver or push the speaker button.
  2. Dial 4-7444.
  3. You will be prompted for a passcode. Enter 24689; this is the default passcode for the department.
  4. You will then have a series of options to choose from. Simply follow the menu voice prompts.

Accessing Voicemail

  1. If the voicemail light is blinking, press it.
  2. You will then be prompted for your 5-digit passcode.
  3. Enter the passcode and push #.
  4. Then push "1" and your messages will begin playing.
  5. Once you have listened to a message you can push "7" to delete it and "9" to save it.
"Should I get a P.O. Box?"

Depends on how important is your mail? Just kidding, but seriously, mail services has its quirks here.

You have a few options:

  1. Have mail sent directly to the hall.
  2. Have mail sent to the housing office: 6050 Montezuma Rd., San Diego, CA 92115
  3. Get a P.O. Box. There are several nearby post offices or postal annexes. The closest Post Office is Andrew Jackson at 6401 El Cajon Blvd., San Diego, CA 92115. Take College Ave. to El Cajon and turn left. Go to Art St./64th and turn right.

Each has its pluses and minuses:

  • The hall is most convenient but is less privacy (if you're worried about that) and can be a hassle over the breaks.
  • Having mail sent to the office is also convenient but the office is closed on the weekends and is hit or miss at times with personal mail (not exactly sure why). Bills always make it, but cards and letters from friends/family sometimes get returned to sender.
  • The P.O. Box is probably your most reliable year round option, but is obviously not quite as convenient.
"How do I set up internet in my apartment?"
"How do I check my email when I am out of town?" &
"How do I set an away message for my email?"

You can check your email while you are away from the office by going to the following web address mail.sdsu.edu. You will see an SDSU web page that asks for your username and password. Use your username and password you would use to login to Eudora. This will take you to a web-mail page where you can see what new emails you have received (you will not be able to view emails you have already checked).

If you are out of town or the office you can set an auto-reply message:

  1. Click on "Options" in the top right of the screen.
  2. A new window will open.
  3. In the left hand column under "Mail" click on "Auto-reply."
  4. You can enter whatever message you want to have automatically sent to anyone who sends you an email.
  5. After you have entered your message click "yes" for "Auto-reply to messages."
  6. IMPORTANT: Before closing the window click the green "Apply" button in the top left corner.

Student Evaluations

There are two step to the student evaluation process: (1) student feedback forms -- completed by residents and (2) student evaluations -- done by you.

Student feedback forms are done in the middle of the Fall semester. Each RA passes out the forms at a floor meeting and then has them collected by a resident on the floor in order to insure the feedback forms are not tampered with or viewed by the RA.

Student Evaluations are done at the end of each semester. At the end of the Fall semester you willcomplete evaluations for your RA's and RHCA's. In the Spring you will only complete evaluations for returning RA's and mid-year hires.
