For general info, go to the housing website's official page for Living Learning Community. The page will give you basic information on the LLC and you can even take a virtual tour of one of the rooms!
The LLC is comprised of two identical three-story buildings, Maya and Olmeca.
Omeca houses:
Maya houses:
The front desk for the LLC is located directly next to the front entrance of Olmeca Hall. When classes are in session, the desk is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is one desk assistant at the desk during daytime hours. During nighttime hours (9pm - 1am on weekdays; 9pm - 3am Friday & Saturdays) there is one desk assistant and one security monitor. During nighttime hours there is also a security monitor inside the entrance to Maya Hall seven days a week.
The number for the LLC front desk is 4-4146 from an on-campus phone, (619)594-4146 from off-campus phones.
The front doors to Olmeca Hall get a lot of use and can break down on occasion. Typical problems to look out for is the doors coming off track or getting stuck in the open or closed position.
What to do: If the doors get off track you can attempt to push them back on track. If this does not work follow maintenance protocol. If the doors are stuck in the open or closed position first check the on/off switch at the top of the doors. If the doors have been accidentally turned off, simply turn them back on. If this does not work or is not the case follow maintenance protocol.
Special Note: Sometimes the desk assistants may decide to turn the doors off to keep them open if it is too hot or cold. Make sure they know not to do this. It is not only a security issue, but it could create a maintenance issue as well.
During Welcome Week, the LLC has a kick-off hall-wide competition to see who can eat the most cupcakes. At the first floor meeting, each wing has to nominate someone to represent them at the contest. Then each wing representative gets a tray of cupcakes (which can be bought at Ralph's or any other grocery store/tray). Whoever eats the whole tray of cupcakes first wins a pizza party for the wing.
At the end of the Fall semester, the LLC holds a formal banquet in Montezuma Hall. Aztec Shops caters the food. There are hall awards, an academic incentives auction and a slideshow.
At the end of the year, the LLC puts on a BBQ either by the pool or in the Tula, depending on the weather. Like the banquet, Aztec Shops caters and there are hall awards, an academic incentives auction and a slideshow.
Each year the LLC puts on a Talent Show. The show can be restricted to LLC residents or it can be opened up to all the halls. The Tula is a good location for the show.
All the check-in stations for the LLC are indoors. The first row of stations are immediately inside the main entrance to Olmeca Hall in the lobby. The final station with keys and swipe cards is in the Olmeca Seminar room. For more information on what you should have at each station refer to the annual report on the server under LLC.
At one point during the day you will have a parents' meeting in the Tula. An agenda for the meeting will be e-mailed to you prior to opening. You will basically tell the parents a little about housing and Tenochca and then field questions. Do not worry too much about this, other REO/OHA staff members will be present to help you with questions.
Intent to Vacates, Room Conditions and Express Check-out forms should be placed or filed at the front desk so that RAs and DAs can easily access them. The Express Check-out box is located on the left of the front desk (it's a large black box; you can't miss it). RAs should be given keys and packets of forms for each resident of his/her floor. Once the RAs have collected all their keys, have each RA check his/her floor's keys and then swap with another RA and double-check key issues. You can collect all the keys and forms after you have done your final walk-thrus of each floor.
Special Note: Do not stress out too much about closing, there will be plenty of training on it at the end of the year. The closing checklist will also help you a great deal with closing, however if you would like to see how past LLC RHCs handled closing you can refer to the old documents on the server under LLC/Closing.
Set aside time during training to make sure the RAs have some good programs lined up for the beginning of the year. Attendance for programs in the LLC tends to be strong so it is important to start with quality programs so that attendance does not dwindle.
Take advantage of the fact that all residents in the LLC are in LINCS. Because the students are in many of the same classes it is much easier to plan academic programs for certain courses.
There are a couple of ways residents attempt to bypass security at the Omeca front desk. Students can follow Tenochca or Zura residents into their buildings and then walk into the LLC courtyard and gain access to either Maya or Olmeca Hall. There is no easy way to solve this problem other than to document residents when they are caught and to notify the Tenochca and Zura RHCs and RHCAs if the issue starts becoming a significant problme.
