Layout

The layout for Chappy is fairly simple. It is an 11-story building with three wings. There are general facilities on the first floor and resident rooms on floors 2 thru 11.

First floor:

  1. Front desk
  2. RHC Office
  3. RHCA Office
  4. Recreation room
  5. Laundry facilities
  6. Hall Council Office
  7. RHC Apartment
  8. FIR Apartment
  9. Entrance to elevators

All other floors:

  1. All residents
  2. RAs
  3. RezCon Assistant
  4. Floor lounges
  5. Trash chute
The Desk

Chappy's front desk is located directly to the right of the front entrance. When classes are in session, the desk is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is one desk assistant at the desk during daytime hours. During nighttime hours (9pm - 1am on weekdays; 9pm - 3am Friday & Saturdays) there is one desk assistant and one security monitor.

The number for Chappy's desk is 4-6853 from an on-campus phone, (619)594-6853 from off-campus phones.

Facility Issues

Fire Alarms

False Fire Alarms are not a major concern, but they can occur in Chappy due to a variety of reasons. Common ways smoke detectors are triggered in Chappy include burnt popcorn, steam in the bathrooms and residents smoking in their rooms. Allowing residents back in after a fire alarm can be a lengthy process and students sometimes try to sneak in via the stairwell door next to the front entrance.

Traditions
Opening

The check-in stations are set up in the Cholula, which is the large community center directly in front of Chappy. There is plenty of room for residents and their family members to line up and go through the stations. Parking can be a problem in Chappy because there is only the small lot on the street level. Some residents attempt to park and unload on the street, but they can be ticketed by San Diego PD. For more information on what you should have at each station refer to the annual report on the server under Tenochca.

At one point during the day you will have a parents' meeting. An agenda for the meeting will be e-mailed to you prior to opening. You will basically tell the parents a little about housing and Chappy and then field questions. Do not worry too much about this, other REO/OHA staff members will be present to help you with questions.

Closing

Intent to Vacates, Room Conditions and Express Check-out forms should be placed or filed at the front desk so that RAs and DAs can easily access them. The Express Check-out box is located on the left of the front desk (it's a large black box; you can't miss it). RAs should be given keys and packets of forms for each resident of his/her floor. You can collect all the keys and forms after you have done your final walk-thrus of each floor.

Special Note: Do not stress out too much about closing, there will be plenty of training on it at the end of the year. The closing checklist will also help you a great deal with closing, however if you would like to see how past Chappy RHCs handled closing you can refer to the old documents on the server under Chapultepec/Closing.

Insider Info

In the Back

There are a couple of interesting issues related to the backside of Chappy:

  1. Students smoking behind the building -- Make sure to let your staff know to be on the look-out for students sneaking behind the building to smoke cigarettes and other tobacco-like products.
  2. "Community members" dumpster diving -- Collecting cans and other discarded treasures is not uncommon at Chappy because people can pull their trucks right up to the dumpsters to load them up with whatever they find.
